W-2 vs 1099: Which One Do You Have?

Every year when tax season rolls around, one of the most common questions people ask is: “What’s the difference between a W-2 and a 1099?” If you’ve ever worked a regular job or done freelance work, chances are you’ve seen one of these forms. But knowing which one you have and what it means can make a big difference when filing your taxes.

What Is a W-2 Form?

A W-2 is the tax form you receive when you work as a regular employee. Your employer sends it to you at the beginning of the year, usually by January 31st.

It shows:

  • How much money you earned
  • How much federal and state tax was withheld
  • Social Security and Medicare contributions

If you work a traditional 9-to-5 job, you’ll get a W-2. The good news is your employer has already been taking taxes out of your paycheck all year, so you usually don’t owe as much at tax time.

What Is a 1099 Form?

A 1099 is the tax form used for independent contractors, freelancers, and self-employed workers. If you drove for a rideshare app, did freelance work, or got paid as a contractor, expect a 1099.

The biggest difference? No taxes are withheld for you. That means you are responsible for setting aside money for taxes throughout the year.

Common types of 1099 forms include:

  • 1099-NEC — freelance or contract work
  • 1099-MISC — miscellaneous income
  • 1099-INT — interest income from a bank
  • 1099-DIV — dividend income from investments

Can You Have Both a W-2 and a 1099?

Absolutely. Many people have a regular job and do side work too. If that’s you, you’ll receive both forms and need to report all of that income when you file. This is very common and nothing to worry about. Just make sure you have both forms ready before you file.

What If You Don’t Receive Your Forms on Time?

Employers and clients are required to send your forms by January 31st. If you haven’t received yours by mid-February, reach out to your employer or client first. If you still cannot get it, the IRS can help you get the information you need.
